On the night of April 26, staff at a Shenzhen bar turned someone away because he was "ugly." The man, whose last name is Zhang, had been planning on celebrating his birthday there with friends.

When the incident happened, six of his buddies were already waiting inside Lili Marleen, in Nanshan District's Baoli Culture Square. According to one of Zhang's friends, surnamed Peng, they had already sat down and paid for their drinks when they were told that the birthday boy wouldn't be allowed inside.

“…there was a waiter who came and said 'Your friend can’t come in,'" Peng told reporters.

At first it wasn't clear why Zhang was barred from entry. When the group asked about it, the staff member didn't respond. Peng inquired if his friend was wearing sandals, but the waiter said no.

"Later I asked again, [the waiter] said he’s ugly."

Meanwhile, Zhang was left hanging. According to him, Lili Marleen staff didn't explain why he wasn't allowed to enter, saying only: "you can’t come in."

The whole group was eventually told to leave the bar and had their money returned to them.

The incident was a blow to Zhang, understandably. Since childhood he's suffered from angiomas, a type of benign tumor that left behind marks on his face.

His friend Peng later had a chance to meet with a Lili Marleen staff member who confirmed details of the incident and said that management would "sternly criticize and educate" the employee responsible. The staff member also said he'd like to meet Zhang in person to apologize on behalf of the bar.
