There was a rumble in Foshan last Saturday as the Guangzhou Rams Rugby Club earned an impressive 48-10 victory of the Shenzhen Dragons. The game was hard-fought on both sides, with several temper flare ups seen throughout the game. Thankfully, both sides patched things up after the match and set upon Xingsheng Lu like a biblical plauge, padding the margins and ledgers of pubs up and down the street.
The sterling regular season records earned by both squads assures both Shenzhen and Guangzhou playoff spots in the Sino-15s cup playoffs.
The Rams, undefeated on the season, will travel to play the Chengdu Pandas on April 22 for the Sino Cup semifinals. If they win that game, they will host the winner of the Beijing Devils and Shanghai Silver Dragons, the latter being the defending Sino 15s champs.
The winner of this game will be crowned the top social rugby team in China, leaving the loser with no recourse except to go to Hooley’s and drown their sorrows one RMB30 pint of Tiger at a time.

The Shenzhen side, their season marred only by the two losses to the Rams, will also travel on April 22. The Dragons venture to Kunming to play the Kunming Flying Tigers Rugby club. Shenzhen will hope Kunming is indeed the ‘land of eternal spring’ and paradise it is portended to be as they try to get on the sunny side of things and punctuate their season on a positive note.
