Bohemian music bar Magma is shutting shop March 31 after being told it will no longer be able to host events, owing to warnings about noise and crowds.
“Magma is a concept that revolves around music, so we’ve decided to give up that space since we can't do music anymore,” said bar founder Edo, who requested to be identified by first name.
A series of warnings from authorities and complaints by neighbors seems to have come to a head after an event last Friday that saw the bar remain open past 4am.
Run by formerly Beijing-based expatriates Umbe, Edo and Stefano, Magma made a name for itself by catering to both expatriate and local customers while hosting spoken word nights, art shows and concerts.
“We had some complaints in the past, the only difference was that this time it was an official warning. Just too many people and too loud,” said Umbe.
Magma will remain open until Friday, March 31, but the music and performance ban means that the upcoming Free Thinkers art and music show will be canceled is looking for a new venue.
"We are looking for places, but it’s not easy. We want to keep the same concept. Sure it will be a bar with cocktails and everything, but we want to have music,” said Edo. “We need to find a place where we won’t bother the neighbors.”
“We have delicious hamburgers and cocktails, and you’ll finally be able to talk to us in a quiet environment,” reads Magma’s official Douban account.
