An extremely rare species of snake was recently discovered in Lingnan National Nature Reserve, which sits across from the cities of Shaoguan and Qingyuan in northern Guangdong, according to Tencent News. This is the first time the reptile has been seen in the province.
The snake, identified as Maculophisbellus, or Bella Rat Snake (Elphae Bella), has previously been sighted in Hunan, although it is very seldom found in China, according to Zhang Liang, a snake expert with the Guangdong Institute of Applied Biological Resources.
People in Guangdong are known to dine on snakes, which are sometimes also steeped in baijiu to make snake wine. In fact, our team has previously interviewed a wet market worker who specializes in selling and butchering snakes, turtles and toads, among other creatures.
With summer creeping up on us in Guangdong, snakes are set to awaken from hibernation and set out into the world. Incidents of snake bites have been reported not long ago in Meizhou, eastern Guangdong, so be sure to arm yourself with knowledge of what to do if you are bitten by a snake.
