On November 9, the inspection bureaus in Bao'an, Longgang, Guangming, Longhua commenced a month of inspections for meter manipulation at Bao'an Airport, Longhua Bus station and other areas populated with green taxis.
Investigators will look for the installation of a meter jump device, forged data, unauthorized changes with the meter device and other measuring instrument violations, according to Tencent News.
There are two ways for taxi drivers to “play” with the meter. One way is to block the last digit of the mileage with black tape; this prevents passengers from feeling suspicious over the significant mileage increase. Another is to attach a wire to the meter so the taxi driver can alter the meter with a remote control. With these maneuvers taxi drivers can modify the meter to increase RMB1 for every three seconds.
Taxis suspected to have tampered with the meter system are found to be from An Heng and Kang Da Er transportation company. However, most complaints are from passengers who have riden An Heng taxis.
Currently, investigators have encountered two green taxis at Bao’an airport who they suspect had altered their meter systems. One taxi driver was found without a taxi driver’s licence, while the other driver escaped after seeing the inspection officers.
