The idea of getting a third of the way through your beer, only to discover there are insects in it, is undoubtedly the kind of thing nightmares are made of. Unfortunately for one Dongguan man, this actually happened to him.
According to a story that recently ran on Dongguan TV, a man surnamed Lee recently discovered insects (although it's never disclosed which type) “happily swimming” in his bottle of beer while at dinner with friends.
The beer was reportedly shipped in September and no abnormal openings where discovered upon closer inspection. According to a number of Guangzhou brewers, the most likely explanation for the presence of bugs inside a sealed beer would be that the bottle was reused and improperly cleaned before being refilled. This hypothesis makes sense, considering flies do enjoy buzzing around empty beer bottles and the creatures in the above images do resemble fly larva.
"I'm not sure what that bug is, I have seen it in empty bottles,” said Guangzhou brewmaster David Strand. “I think it may be some kind of moth. It is hard to clean out of the bottle so, as a homebrewer, I wouldn't use those bottles if I saw them.”
Lee seems to be taking the whole thing pretty well, commenting he “hopes that manufacturers can give an explanation" for the beer-quatic bugs.
As your mother probably told you as a kid, the extra protein never hurt anyone…
