The idea for the Free Thinkers events started over a few shots of tequila, says three-year Shenzhen resident Curt Zimpfer.
Starting as a plan for a friend to talk about being African American in China, organizer Zimpfer turned it into a three-hour event for people who want to speak, read poetry or even perform magic.
“It's been pretty much all over the place so far,” says Zimpfer of the event that was first held in May.
He describes a magic show combined with a speech about seduction as being memorable, but darker issues have been broached.
Ben Tiner speaks at a previous Free Thinkers event.
“We’re not exactly looking for heavy stuff, but it tends to go that way,” he says.
Zimpfer recalls an American writer talking about struggling with depression and alcohol. “I think you could hear a pin drop.”
The theme of the upcoming and third Free Thinkers event? Loneliness. But an improv group will also perform.
It will be held this Saturday in Magma from 7-10pm.
Anyone who wants to perform in the future can contact Zimpfer via WeChat at CurtZ59.
Sat Sept 24, 7-10pm; free (but attendees are encouraged to buy a drink). Magma. See event listing.
