Shenzhen's First Science Film Week Brings Hi-Tech Fun

Next week, from September 20-27, Shenzhen will play host to a whirlwind of technology and movie-related events for the first-ever 2016 Shenzhen Science Film Week (SZSFW).

The theme of the week is “Science and the Future.” Accordingly, events will include exhibits with life-size models of dinosaurs, sci-fi film screenings and demonstrations of cutting-edge special effects technology. As the Science Film Week is partly sponsored by Shenzhen’s Nanshan District government, most of the events will take place there.

Some require preregistration, while others are open to the public. Check out the schedule below:

SZSFW schedule

The opening ceremony for SZSFW, to be held in the OCT Bay Exhibition Center, will feature eye-catching demonstrations of some of the gadgetry Shenzhen has to offer. For instance, we’ll get to see the advanced 3D mapping tech Lady Gaga used to transform herself into David Bowie at the Grammys this year.

Some of that special effects magic.

Other crowd pleasers include a light show, both inside and outside the venue, and dancing robots. To register for the event, visit this page (for English directions, see below).

Unfortunately, organizers have said that there will be no English captions or translations available for the films being screened around the city, or the special lectures.

The Dinosaur Art Exhibit will be accessible, though. For the week of the event, it will display large-as-life sculpted models, as well as sketches and videos that show how they were created.

The Future Science and Technology Exhibit will also have VR (virtual reality) demonstrations available for visitors, while the video-shooting contest is open to all.
