The first Western-run vegan eatery to make waves in Shenzhen has closed after about five months of operation. A widely circulated WeChat post by owner Stephanie Morris cited "creative differences in management" for the September 9 closure of the Costal City restaurant.
Morris later told That's that financial mismangement on the part of her partner, including choosing a location that was too expensive, also played a role.
Former-partner Matt Sigurdson was reached in Japan and had a different take on the situation.
"We were ahead of the times, attempting to pioneer a movement and it didn't catch on the way we were hoping," said Sigurdson about the "health-food approach" the Green Room was advocating. "We had a lot of support from the foreign community, but that isn't enough."
Morris said she has plans for other projects in Shenzhen, including reopening the Green Room in a different location. Morris added that she is on good terms with an investor she worked with before.
