Wanna drink and write poetry? Head to EnnoSpace Saturday night.
The Drunken Poets’ Night is notable for being an English-poetry event in sometimes culturally-challeneged Shenzhen.
"There is a reason it's called Drunken Poets',” said event organizer Elise Blanchet. Specifically, RMB700 worth of alcohol, which will be served to those who pay the RMB70 entry fee.
“[It won’t be] drunk people screaming around, but people having fun and laughing,” said Blanchet. “We want to see Chinese speakers and English speakers mixing.”
Blanchet has a plan to get strangers talking: have them translate something.
“There will be a small exercise with a Chinese poem and trying to translate it into an English poem,” said Blanchet. “If we translate Chinese to English, the teams have to master both languages.”
Ennospace bills itself as "an innovative English education center," but has also shown a penchant for hosting get-togethers.
The event's poster includes the slogan ‘Let the absinthe inspire you.’ Absinthe being the favored spirit of 19th-century European writers who tended to produce incredible work before going batshit insane.
The absinthe—which does not actually make you go insane—will be served the ‘traditional way’ and has been brought in from the Czech Republic, Blanchet said. Wine and beer will also be served, according to the event description.
Register for the event through yoopay.cn.
