On August 16 police detained a 22-year-old man who used a knife to hold up a hotel’s front desk, reportedly to get money to feed his Internet addiction, according to the Shenzhen Economic Daily.
Around 5am on August 16, after standing in a Yantian hotel lobby and casting ‘furtive’ glances at the woman behind the counter, Deng Shuang pulled out a 15cm-long fruit knife and threatened her.
“This is a robbery! Take out the money! Don’t alert the police! Don’t shout! Otherwise, I will stab you to death!” Deng reportedly said in a strangely precise quote. The article notes that the woman behind the counter felt frightened so she gave Deng RMB3,200.
Armed robbery just to get on the net? Well, the Shenzhen Economic Daily report doesn’t really provide evidence that the man was addicted to the Internet, outside of mentioning the migrant from Gaozhou was caught in an Internet bar seven hours after the robbery.
The report does however say the man had no money or job, so he could have committed the crime for many reasons.
Deng was caught the same day at 12.40pm in an internet cafe with the fruit knife.
