A man in Lianjiang city, Guangdong had a rough go recently when he discovered RMB40,000 worth of possessions had been stolen from his home while he was accompanying his wife in labor. The worst part? Surveillance footage showed the thieves were dressed only in their undies, with towels wrapped childishly around their heads for 'disguise.'
The video shows a slim, tall man in his 50s emerge naked from the bathroom carrying a flashlight around 2am. When he spots the indoor monitor, he does a quick 360, ducking back into the washroom. About a minute later, he emerges again, this time with a towel wrapped around his head and face, ready to commit the crime.
While he searches the first floor, a second man – also sporting just his underwear – walks out of the bathroom. Together, the two roam around the house, searching around tables and combing through drawers.
The two eventually wander upstairs and, upon discovering there are no monitors there, hang out until nearly 4am, at which point the footage shows them return safely to the first floor. One man grabs a set of keys from the coffee table and the two exit confidently out the front door of the house.
The proprietor, surnamed Chen, is a village doctor who lives in Liangdong, a small town situated along State Road No. 207 in the southwest part of Guangdong province. At around 9am on August 3, he was with his wife in their home when she started having labor pains. He immediately accompanied her to the hospital.
At 7am on August 4, he received a call from his mother, who told him their house had been ransacked: the safe was gone, as was RMB10,000 in cash and his wife’s entire jewelry collection, valued at RMB30,000. Mr. Chen's motorcycle keys and various confidential documents were also stolen, for a total loss of more than RMB40,000.
“The stolen motorcycle was new and worth around RMB10,000,” Mr. Chen told reporters. “The good thing is, I had installed a GPS, so police helped me track it down and returned it two days later. But the safe and the jewelry… we don’t know where they are. We don’t know if we’ll ever get those back.”
