A fatal July 24 electrical accident in a Shenzhen apartment building has led to the sudden eviction of more than 80 residents.
On July 26, two days after an electrical accident inside the apartment building in Xinxing Village, Futian District, killed a resident, a notice was posted saying all rental contracts were being terminated and everyone had to vacate the building.
"The contract was until the end of the year, the way they one-sidedly ended the contract was not reasonable," said a man, identified as Mr. Jin. "And only giving us three days’ time, how do we find a place?”
The notice, posted outside the main entrance of the building, declared that the more than 80 people who lived inside would have to vacate their apartments by the 28th.
According to a reporter from Shenzhen Evening News, the building had emptied by the morning of the 28th, with some former residents still milling around the area.
The electrical accident killed a man identified as Mr. Lin and injured his wife. Their two young children seemed to be unharmed.
A former resident of the building, surnamed Zhao, said that he'd come home around 9pm on the 24th, to find an emergency vehicle parked outside. His neighbors said that the electricity had been turned off and that they wouldn't be able to sleep in their homes that night.
On July 26, residents found an eviction notice from the Shangmeilin Industrial Company taped next to the front door. It explained that the building no longer met government safety standards. Residents' housing contracts would be terminated and everyone had to leave.
A representative from the Shangmeilin Industrial Company stated that former renters would get RMB200 in compensation, leaving many longtime residents disgruntled.
One woman said she hadn't received compensation.
