We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: drug dealing is not a wise career choice in the People’s Republic of China – or anywhere for that matter. Four individuals in Zhuhai learnt this the hard way last week, when they received death sentences for their involvement in trafficking methamphetamine.

Two were handed death with a two-year reprieve, according to Shanghai Daily, while 13 others received varying prison sentences, including, for some individuals, life behind bars. The drug trafficking syndicate was sentenced on June 23 and stood accused of selling approximately 5 kilograms of meth.

The sentence came on the same day a Beijing court sentenced a 22-year-old man to death, with a two-year probation, for transporting 2 kilograms of meth in November 2015. The man was caught at a Beijing railway station after arriving on a train from Guangzhou.

The Beijing sentence comes hot on the heels of a police announcement that drug use in on the rise in the capital. As we reported last week, There are currently 33,000 registered drug users in Beijing. Over the past five years this number has climbed an average of 12.3 percent each year.
