Yesterday at 1.47pm, police in Shenzhen’s Bao’an District received an alarming emergency call: a man with a knife was attacking people in the Shajing passenger terminal.

The Bao’an police responded in record time, contacting headquarters to immediately send out a response team. By 1.50pm, with the help of security personnel at the station, the attacker had been subdued.

Seven people (five males, two females) had been injured by the knife-wielder, who has only been identified by his surname, Tan. The victims were transported to hospital and, as of the Bao’an Police Bureau’s latest update on Weibo yesterday evening, all of them are in stable condition.

To date, the only personal details known about Tan is that he is a 38-year-old male from Guangxi province with a history of mental illness. The weapon used in the attack was a ‘small knife,’ according to reports.

Although much still remains unknown about the case, the Bao’an Police Bureau have reassured the public that they are still actively investigating the incident.
