Hilary Bower, the British national and Hong Kong lecturer that disappeared in Shenzhen on March 22 has been confirmed dead, according to Hong Kong Free Press.
There has been no word yet on the cause of Bower’s death and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain murky and confusing at best.
The 60-year-old Shenzhen resident disappeared on March 22 after crossing from Hong Kong into Shenzhen at the Luohu border crossing. The last time anyone heard from him was shortly after 9pm, when he called his girlfriend – whom he shares a 6-year-old son with.
Bower, a long time expatriate, started lecturing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1996 and had chosen to live in Shenzhen due to its cheaper housing prices and easy commute to the Chinese territory.
As we reported earlier this week, Bower’s disappearance came shortly after reaching an agreement to sell his Shekou property for HKD9 million (approximately RMB7,500,000). According to earlier reports, he had not yet received the funds from the sale.
Whether Bower’s death is linked to the sale is still unclear.
The West Kowloon Missing Person Investigation Unit informed bower’s girlfriend of his death earlier today.
