WATCH: Flights Canceled in Shenzhen, Chaos Ensues

Thunderstorms boomed over the PRD yesterday, bringing with them rain, wind and, of course, flight cancelations.

Baiyun International Airport, in Guangzhou, and Baoan International Airport, in Shenzhen, saw a collective 400 flights cancelled and thousands stranded, according to The Standard HK. Baoan International Airport’s official Weibo account stated yesterday that roughly 6,000 passengers were stuck in the airport as a result of the cancelations.

The stormy mayhem was also responsible for Baoan airport’s first red alert of the year, issued at 9.16am yesterday morning. Under Shenzhen’s alert system, a red alert means over 20 percent of the day’s flights have been postponed by an hour or more. The alert was eventually downgraded to an orange alert at 5.02pm last night, according to The Standard HK.

The delays and cancelations caused some understandable frustration, with video footage emerging of travelers scuffling with airport staff (see video below).

In Guangzhou, the situation was only mildly better, with 172 flights cancelled and 81 delayed. Baiyun International Airport issued an orange alert.

According to reports, Hong Kong International Airport was not seriously affected by the delays that befell Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
