This Wednesday, Futian District in Shenzhen will unveil a massive underground high-speed rail station, which will offer connections to Kowloon in Hong Kong, Guangzhou (South Station), Changsha, Wuhan, Zhengzhou and Beijing

Said to be the largest high-speed railway station built completely underground, Futian Station (福田站) is conveniently located at the intersection of Yitian Lu and Shennan Dadao in the heart of Shenzhen’s CBD.

There will be 11 pairs of high-speed trains running between Futian Station and Guangzhou South Station through January 9, after which that number will increase to 23 sets per day. Tickets between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, available for purchase on www.12306.cn or at the station, will sell at RMB82 for regular class and RMB108 for first class.

Travel time estimations seem to vary, but most appraisals place the journey between 30-50 minutes. The Hong Kong Free Press puts the trip time from Shenzhen North to Guangzhou South at 36 minutes, with one stop in between.

The Shenzhen – Hong Kong stretch of the high-speed rail line will not be open until 2017, according to Travel China Guide, and will have a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour – notably faster than the 135 kilometers per hour HK Airport Express. Once finished, the trip from Hong Kong to Beijing is expected to take 10 hours.

Guangzhou South Station (广州南站), located in Panyu (about a 45-minute taxi ride from Tianhe District), is an interchange station and a terminus between the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, Guangzhou-Maoming Railway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway and Beijing-Guangzhou High Speed Railway.

Residents of Yuexiu, Liwan, Haizhu and Tianhe districts will still find Guangzhou East Station (广州东站) a more convenient option to commute to Shenzhen.
