Model? Artist? Musician? Dancer? Human right fighter? FAKA from South Africa is hard to define. The hard-to-define gender, shape, aesthetics and the music they produce all go against the conventional definition. Their music was inspired by Gqom, an experimental African-style electronic music that makes it easier for people to dance than ever.
Without any boundaries, FAKA is like an unapologetic force in nature. Now, we bring this power to China, hoping to let you feel the the intersection of race, gender, spirituality and music by the South African phenomenon they show.
FAKA is a pioneer cultural movement duo composed of contemporary South African performing artists Desire Marea and Thato (aka Fela Gucci). Since their performance began eight years ago, they have been subverting South Africa's impression of marginalized groups of people of color and leading South Africa's transformation through their art.
FAKA hopes that the young people who have embarked on similar paths with them will exercise their insight and remain loyal to themselves, know their value, and always remember 'why.' It also hopes that you will be there to experience their interpretation of art and strong perception of self-existence for yourself.
