Starting at 8pm, we'll hold a short talk on the fictional ‘Chinese’ super-villain Dr. Fu Manchu. Once the popular creation of British author Arthur Ward (aka Sax Rohmer), Fu has since become infamous for representing early 20th-century Western stereotypes about China.
Could he be more than just a shallow, racist trope? Armed with a 1970s reprint of an original Fu Manchu novel and a Powerpoint presentation, we'll delve into the mystery behind the man.
In addition, our library will be open for checkouts and returns for the duration of the event, which ends at 9pm.
