Shanghai Fight Night is upon us! The brawl goes down on December 6, when amateurs and pros will enter the ring and show us, the encouraging spectators, what they're made of. In the run-up to this night of carnage, we presented our unique questionnaire to the fighters, and here is what they had to say...
Urs 'Big Panda' Casagrande
Age: 30
Profession: Product line manager
Nationality: Swiss
Weight: 94 kg
Favorite boxing knock-out:
Favorite quote: "The sweet isn't sweet without the sour." Boxing provides plenty of sour, yet life overall is often very sweet and rewarding.
Favorite boxer: Manny Pacchiao
Why are you fighting? The purity of the competition is exciting. And it provides a huge stimulus to train hard and somehow experience a unique thrill in one's life.
What is the toughest part of it all? Of training: Maybe that it demands a lot of commitment in an already super demanding "white collar" life. Of fighting: By stepping into the ring, one must become fierce opponents of an otherwise good friend.
If you could fight anyone, who would it be? I'd probably choose Jacky Chan or Sylvester Stallone in order to see how their movie skills translate into real life... And have hopefully lots of fun with them.
What’s your best boxing story? Well, boxing is a bit of a serious activity. What amazes me usually is the degree of exhaustion that one can reach, especially when sparring. One starts to forget the most basic techniques (like holding the hands in front of the face for defense) and suddenly gets hit incredibly out of the blue... Things can then turn dark veeery quickly.
Motivation for boxing: Getting to know good people really well, while staying fit.
Alvin '50 Shades' Gray-lin
Age: 43
Profession: Entrepreneur
Nationality: United States
Weight: 92 kg
Favorite quote: “Leave a dent in the universe!”
Favorite boxer: Ali
Favorite boxing knock-out: The knockout is only the ending…the real story was told in how the fight developed. Most fights don’t end in a knockout, but can still be a great struggle between the two fighters!
Why are you fighting? To stay fit and to challenge myself and also inspire other Chinese white collars/executives to stay fit and pick up the sport! Right now most fighters are Westerners and younger. I want to show that even more mature Chinese men can play this game.
What is the toughest part of it all? Making time to train consistently.
If you could fight anyone, who would it be? Tiger Woods. We’re about the same size…and I’m a big fan of his golf achievements. It would make for a good show…
What’s your best boxing story? Chris has one training drill where two guys sit on a bench face-to-face and spar three rounds without being able to move our feet. I was placed in there with Josh, who’s 15 kg heavier and it was a very humbling experience…but quite educational as well.
Motivation for boxing: Stay fit and overcome challenges.
