Shanghai Fight Night is upon us! The brawl goes down on December 6, when amateurs and pros will enter the ring and show us, the encouraging spectators, what they're made of. In the run-up to this night of carnage, we presented our unique questionnaire to the fighters, and here is what they had to say...
Nelson ‘The Admiral’ Gable
Age: 24
Profession: Relationship Manager, AustCham
Shanghai Nationality: Australian
Weight: 93kg
Favorite boxing knock-out:
Favorite quote: “If you aren’t living on the edge you are taking up too much space” – Jim Whittakar
Favorite boxer: It has to be Iron Mike Tyson.
Why are you fighting? I set a goal to prove that I could. Fighting is the final test.
What is the toughest part of it all? Coming home from a long day at work and knowing you are about to go and get hit repeatedly is never fun.
If you could fight anyone, who would it be? I reckon Elvis Presley needed to be taken down a notch or two.
Best boxing story? Believe it or not, my distant uncle Daniel Mendoza was a famous English boxing champion from 1792-1795. They say he pioneered the ‘Scientific Style’ - here’s hoping a bit of that was passed down to me.
Motivation for boxing: To prove to myself that I could.
Thomas 'Butch' de Carvalho
Age: 25
Profession: Liquor Brand Manager at Brinkman Beverages
Nationality: French / Swiss
Weight: 97kg
Favorite boxing knock-out:
Favorite quote: I have a couple but the first one that comes to mind when I think boxing is “Mind over matter”. I’m a firm believer that our mind is the strongest muscle in our body.
Favorite boxer: Mike Tyson
Why are you fighting? Why not? It’s a great challenge to train for one of the toughest sports in front of more than 500 people stuffing their face with food and alcohol. I know I’ll be proud of myself for going through with it.
What is the toughest part of it all? Not drinking!
If you could fight anyone, who would it be? Mark Wahlberg, there is something about him that makes me want to prove I can outsmart him.
Best boxing story? First time I came to Shanghai, at the time visiting friends, I trained at Golden Glove Boxing. It was a sunny day, clear skies, and I just remember looking out the window and thinking that it was pretty badass to train on the 17th floor of a building over the city. We achieve things in Shanghai we wouldn’t challenge ourselves to back home.
Motivation for boxing: Why not?
