Town Crier! People keep stealing artwork, electrical wiring from Suzhou Creek

Town Crier! is random snippets of Shanghai news that just may have an effect on your life...

This is why we can't have nice things. More than 30 bronze plates depicting 'Old Shanghai' scenes have been stolen from their public exhibition area along Suzhou Creek and, because thievery knows no bounds, electrical wiring and light bulbs have gone missing as well.

The robberies started several years ago (the plates were originally hung up in 2008) and have now become enough of a problem that extra security has been added to protect the objects. 33 of the original 54 plates have been stolen, and authorities assume they have been resold as scrap metal.

One would have hoped security would have been increased after, say, 20 of the plaques went missing, but better late than never. If you're interested in seeing these old Shanghai scenes by the creek, we recommend visiting while there are still some left!
