Town Crier! Shanghai to get GOLD London cabs next month

Town Crier! is random snippets of Shanghai news that just may have an effect on your life...

It's taxi options abound in the coming months and now The Shanghai Daily reports that London cabs are arriving in town, but not as we know them...

The famous vehicles will be painted an 'eye-catching' gold color instead of the black color they are well-known for. Apparently the Qiangsheng Taxi Co thinks the change in color suits the city better. Nice one guys, we're sure the iconic London cars had secretly always wanted a big old bling upgrade.

The flag-down fare will be RMB19 (US$3.09, RMB5 more than regular taxis) for the first 3 kilometers, but the higher fare has yet to be fully approved by the city’s transport authority. The fare for each kilometer after that initial charge will be RMB2.6 (RMB0.2 more than the others).

Geely’s 200 China-made TX4 taxis are in the final stages of production and the Chinese automaker released pictures of the vehicles yesterday. They are the same model as the London black taxis. Qiangsheng (Shanghai’s largest taxi company) said the first batch of 50 London cabs will be on the roads as early as the National Day holiday (October 1).

They're aiming to man the taxis with drivers who have exceptional records because the taxis are primarily aimed at providing service to elderly and disabled customers. They'll have two fixed seats facing two foldable seats at the back and there will be no seat next to the driver leaving a space solely for storing luggage.

We can't wait to flag one of these puppies down!
