Beijing Hair Culture
What: Hair Cut & Finishing
Price: RMB200-420
Location: Fourth floor of the Hilton on Huashan Lu – a little random, but it’s nice pretending to be one of the hotel guests as you take the lift up.
Looks like: A no-frill salon, which made the experience ultra-comfy and soothing.
Extra perks: Wifi to snap selfies as your new hairdo takes shape and plenty of English-language magazines. We were all over American Vogue.
Service: Beautiful cuts delivered without fuss.
Shiny tresses? Yes. The blow-dry we had managed to give volume to our fine, limp hair without making it frizzy.

Hip Hair Culture
What: Cut, Shampoo & Finishing
Price: RMB70-280
Location: On leafy Xinle Lu – aka Expat Central. But this modern three-story salon isn’t at all snooty, with a staff of talented cutters and colorists.
Looks like: A glossy spot, with a bit of an overly-eager attitude.
Extra perks: Head massage with your hairstyling, we’re told – though we didn’t get one.
Service: Trimming, chopping and clipping are all done efficiently.
Shiny tresses? Well… yes, if you’ve got Asian hair, not so much so if you don’t. After the first wash at home, some of us looked a bit like crazy cat ladies.

The winner:
Beijing Hair Culture. What makes this salon appealing is that the place is refreshingly un-sceney: no air-kissing, no fuss or bumping into peeps you may not want to bump into. For no-nonsense blow-dries and cuts in bright, comfortable surroundings, this is your place.
