A man is in intensive care at Ruijin Hospital after suffering extensive burns to his body in a fire at his home in Zhabei district on Monday, local police said.
His wife is also receiving treatment for burns she sustained, although her condition is said to be less serious.
Neighbours called the emergency services at around 10am after smelling gas and seeing smoke coming from the room. Firefighters then rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze which reportedly started on the couple's bed.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire and have not ruled out the possibility of arson.
