The Phantom of the Opera @ Shanghai Grand Theatre
Are you ready to hear the Music of the Night? Well it's time to get excited, as Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash hit show The Phantom of the Opera is on its way to Shanghai.
Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius – known only as the Phantom – who haunts a subterranean labyrinth beneath the Paris Opera House.
Mesmerized by the talent and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé́ and falls fiercely in love with her.
Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.
With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking special effects and more than 230 costumes by the late, great international theater designer Maria Björnson, The Phantom of the Opera contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous and stirring music, including 'The Phantom of the Opera,' 'Think of Me' and 'Music of the Night.'
Currently only being shown here and on the West End in London, the full tour cast will be in Shanghai, starring internationally renowned musical theater performers.
If you see only one show in Shanghai this year, make it this one.

Dance Me! In China @ Shanghai International Dance Center
Dance Me! In China is a dance marathon between two competing generations. Adapted from She She Pop's Dance Me! In Germany, one side take on the role of the elderly; the others are a group of young performers.
Mutual incomprehension, otherwise known as the generation gap, is brought to the stage and celebrated in a strict dance ritual. The teams take turns: those who are not on the dance floor man the microphones and make music.
The two generations not only make the other group dance to its beat, they also push each other to exhaustion while chalking up a long list of insults, complaints and justifications.
Or is it a show of admiration? Gratitude? We don’t know. For the show, the two teams have practised separately and face off their opponents with their latest moves.
What is a generation anyway? Does it really exist? And if so, what do we have to say to each other? Look here, listen: this is what we have learned, this is where our wisdom lies, this is our concern, our desire, our boredom, our blind spot.
This dance marathon sums it all up!

Dance Me! In China @ Shanghai International Dance Center
The first and the last thing we do is breathing. We breathe around 10,000 liters of air every day, but how much do we know about this little life-depending movement?
Three performers walk on huge grey materials that slowly rise under them. When fully inflated the audience are invited inside the big bubble and sees a body in ever-shifting colors floating like a cocoon over their heads.
This is the start of the performance EXHALE that aims to bring attention to the breath as an interactive element connecting us all.
Dance and electronic sounds communicate abstractly and open, text fragments bring attention to the constant cosmic and rhythmic relation between micro and macro cosmos, while the installation – the actual performance space, is physically being manipulating – pulled and re-shaped, making a dance of its own, that also makes the audience move.

GRACES @ Shanghai International Dance Center
Choreographer Silvia Gribaudi, as a passionate advocate for Italian physical freedom, is committed to breaking the traditional constraints of time and gender on the body. She excels at using satirical techniques to deeply reveal the deep meaning of her works.
The work Water Lotus is deeply inspired by the three marble statues 'Three Beauties' created by Canova, capturing the brilliant, joyful, and prosperous atmosphere they emit. In this work, Gribaudi adopts a pragmatic and down-to-earth approach within the framework of theatrical tradition, cleverly using black humor to invite the audience to experience that unique joy on site.
In a series of dance and comedic scenes, Sylvia Gribaudi works closely with three other male actors, striving to find and successfully win the audience's resonance.
They lead the audience into an imperfect yet personalized world, allowing them to deeply experience that 'beauty' is not limited to surface perfection, but exists within the unique gaze of each individual.

Park of Allures @ Shanghai International Dance Center
Welcome to Park of Allures, a park that is both dystopian and colorful, striving for beauty.
We aspire to engage with the audience, gaze, lights, particle vibrations, and other details, to discuss topics ranging from the body, gender, the world, 'beauty' and 'goodness.'
We want to ask: What is the 'Allure'? Are our identities fixed? Can we help you see yourself?
We inquire, create, and become antonyms. We will dance while watching your eyes.
The body is a state of being, here is like the world, but here is different from the world, here does not have to be like the world, and here is also a state of being.
PS Don't worry about explosions. If any force majeure occurs, the park will still operate normally, because everything is designed.

Anna Karenina the Musical @ AIA Grand Theatre
A spectacular, breathtaking, emotional, and high-tech show based on the Leo Tolstoy masterpiece, Anna Karenina the Musical is returning to Shanghai.
Anna Karenina is a classic of literature, recounting the relationship between a man and a woman, the dramatic love story of the married lady Anna Karenina and a dashing military officer Alexey Vronsky, all taking place amidst the glitter and luxury of the Russian nobility in the second half of the 19th century.
The musical captures the subtle psychology and emotional depth of the great Tolstoy novel, as the characters struggle with overwhelming and controversial feelings – of love and betrayal, passion and duty, hope and desperation.
Although almost a century and a half has passed since the time of the story, the events unfolding before the audience are gripping and touching in their timeless quality.

Liu Shiyuan | CRISPR Whisper @ Fotografiska Shanghai
Spanning photography, video, text, spatial installations, and stage plays, Liu Shiyuan's artistic practice reveals a profound exploration and interrogation of the intricate interplay between images and narratives.
Her works deconstruct and reassemble images down to pixels and video stills, the fundamental units of contemporary visual communication.
This meticulous approach parallels CRISPR gene-editing technology, which modifies the smallest units of life by trimming, cutting, replacing, or adding genes.
Similar to CRISPR, Liu's process of searching, cutting, and re-editing images generates new forms of visual expression and innovative ways of seeing.
Her method of inserting sequences and reorganizing them continually expands the possibilities of visual language while navigating ethical boundaries.
This exhibition features photography series and video works, encapsulating the artist's creative journey over the past decade.

Contemporary African Photography | Marvellous Realism @ Fotografiska Shanghai
The first and largest exhibition of African photography in Asia, Marvellous Realism. The exhibition is curated by Ekow Eshun, project led by Lucy MacGarry, and proudly presented by Fotografiska in partnership with the KT Wong Foundation.
Focused primarily on sub-Saharan African countries, Marvellous Realism is transnational in outlook; the exhibition presents work by established and emerging artists using photography and film as a means to envisage contemporary African cultural identity as a state of ongoing possibility, in which myth, memory and movement weave together into a rich tapestry of expansively imaginative art works.
The exhibition is founded on an awareness of how the rich and diverse contemporary art and cultural scenes in Africa remain largely unknown to the Chinese public, in spite of the importance of long-standing economic and political relationships.
The featured artists in the exhibition invoke Africa as an innately cosmopolitan condition that is closer in kind to the philosopher Achille Mbembe’s description of the continent as 'a body in motion born out of overlapping genealogies, at the intersections of multiple encounters with multiple elsewheres.'
In addition to the exhibition, a specific focus will be on celebrating African culture through diverse programming.
Until Dec 1; RMB80-120, ticket covers all ongoing exhibitions in Fotografiska

Live Music
Flamenco Guitar Master Takahashi Hideo @ MAO Livehouse
Experience the passion and soul of one of Japan’s most exciting Flamenco Guitar living masters when Takahashi Hideo takes to the stage at MAO Livehouse. A true master, his performances regularly thrill audiences.
Born in Hirai, Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, in 1948, the youngest of six brothers picked up the guitar at age 10. It would stay in his hands for his whole life. A student of classical guitarist Sato Tomoshiko and flamenco guitar virtuoso Takada Kenzo, he started his music career at age 20, when he played at the well-known Supper Club in Tokyo. Three years later he moved to Spain, where he perfected his flamenco guitar skills at the famous Maria Rosa Studio and Maria Magdalene Studios.
After performing in the US as a Jazz guitarist he returned to Japan in 1976, where he started performing in the club in Akasaka, the sound of his guitar intertwined with the singing of Midori Komatsu. His music, like the footprints of a traveler on the world stage, is deep and shallow, but firm and full of power. Takahashi Hideo, a traveler on the world stage, is using his guitar to explore the path of cross-cultural music integration.
Takahashi Hideo had his breakthrough with the 1985 album "Recital de Guitarra." Since then, he has not only shone on the stage as a performer, but also cultivated new stars in the Japanese flamenco guitar world such as the Ikegawa brothers and Hasegawa Nuan. His teaching is not only the transmission of skills, but also a spiritual inheritance and a continuation of culture. He regularly performs to this day at Tokyo’s legendary Jazz haunt, the Piano Bar Izumi.
Singer Hiroshige Aika is an astonishing voice of flamenco from the East. Educated in the Spanish Dance Department of Keio University SFC, she was first noticed performing in Flamenco bar Tablao in Tokyo.
In 2010, Hiroshige Aika represented Japan as a flamenco singer in the La Noche Blanca performance in Cordoba. Her singing was like a breeze from the East, blowing through the night sky of Spain, and won wide acclaim.
In 2011, she returned to Japan with a deep understanding and love of flamenco, and served as the main singer for the work El Tiempo Muerto by Spanish dancer Rafael Amargo. Her voice blended perfectly with the dancer's steps, showing the infinite charm of flamenco art.
Now, she will bring her incomparable voice, intertwined with Takahashi Hideo’s guitar strings, to show the infinite charm of flamenco art on stage in Shanghai.
