Brennan draws inspiration for her children’s tales from the Chinese Zodiac. Last year she released Sybil Snake.
What first inspired you to write?
I just loved Dr. Seuss as a child and completely fell for The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish and his other books. They opened my eyes to the wonderful truth that words are for playing with! So I immediately started trying to write stories and poems of my own– and I haven’t really stopped since.
How do you think children’s reading habits today differ from when you were a child?
Books are becoming less wordy, with shorter sentences and fewer words– particularly long words– and are often interrupted by cartoons and distracting fonts and effects. None of this is good for kids, or for our future adults, and we parents need to fight back strongly to regain the high ground with good books, good books and more good books.
If you were a storybook character, which one would you be?
That would have to be Matilda from Roald Dahl’s eponymous book! I love that girl– brilliant, book-loving, possessed of magical powers and no easy pushover either! If only, if only…
