What You Can Expect from a Consultation Session
After suffering from years of shoulder pain due to a regularly dislocated shoulder, I booked in for a consultation session to see what it’s all about.
Dr. Scotty Bew, an Orthopedist at Up Clinic, met with me for roughly 45 minutes and conducted a thorough examination of my shoulder, testing my flexibility, strength and the overall damage that has been done from years of poor form after the first dislocation.
After evaluating my current situation, Dr. Scotty walked me through a PowerPoint to explain what had happened in the dislocation and what I could do to strengthen the muscles around the joint to help prevent dislocation again in the future.
As an expert in non-surgical sports medicine, orthopedics and injury prevention (among many other specialties), Dr. Scotty has 40 years of experience as a Primary Care doctor.
How 10 Minutes of Physical Therapy A Day Can Save Your Joints
Dr. Scotty suggested I see Joseph Sun, a Physical Therapist with a Master of Sports Physiology from Taiwan Cheng Kong University.
Joseph completed his own assessment of my shoulder, then walked me through a number of stretches I could work on daily to improve mobility.
Using exercise bands, workout machines and free weights, Joseph next taught me five different exercises I could do at home or at the gym to strengthen the muscles that surround the shoulder socket to keep it in place and prevent future dislocations.
After performing the exercises to get comfortable with them, Joseph video-recorded me doing them and sent me the short videos through WeChat so I had a reference a few days later, in case I couldn’t quite remember exactly how to position my elbows, shoulders and stance to get the most out of each exercise.
Plus, he gave me a pretty sweet teal workout band to use at home.
Before finishing the session, Joseph also outlined a plan for recovery with me where I could track my progress and continue to learn more through future sessions.
Is my shoulder fully fixed after just one session? Of course not. But I do feel like – after four years of dealing with dislocations, continued injury and pain – I’m on track to improvement.
Is Seeing a Chiropractor Worth It?
After the empowering session with Joseph, I decided – hell, why not hit up all my ailments at once.
Enter Maybelle Heng, a chiropractor certified in New Zealand who has more than five years of clinical experience in Malaysia, New Zealand and China, and focuses on manual, gentle techniques for adjusting the spine from neck to pelvis.
Maybelle works primarily with those who have back and neck pain, headaches, pelvic misalignment and posture concerns.
As a noob to the world of chiropractic, I had zero idea of what to expect from my first one-hour consultation session.
First, she checked my posture, hip and shoulder alignment and back flexibility. After discussing her findings, she suggested we try an alignment session – a process of lying on a padded table where she stretches and flexes my back and then shifts misaligned vertebrae back into place.
Using her body strength and my body’s momentum, she contorted my limbs this way and that, told me to breath out completely and then... POP!
The experience is a bit jarring, especially for first-timers like me, but immediately I felt looser and better, with less pressure on my neck and spine.
About 70% of people do feel a bit achy a few hours after the appointment, but nothing too bad, just like you would the day after a good workout.
Following an initial alignment, Maybelle recommends that patients return once or twice per week for a few weeks as the spine gets more used to the correct realigned position, and then appointments can be spaced out more over time.
All Up Clinic locations remain open during the current COVID-19 restrictions, with a full lineup of doctors and physical therapists available.
