Baseball is known as the "combination of competition and wisdom." It originated in the United Kingdom, developed in the United States and is popular in Asia. And now, more and more people in China are starting to play baseball.

There is no doubt that basketball is everywhere in our daily life, as all kinds of basketball attire, from head to toe, has become fashionable. But you may not have noticed that baseball is actually related to your life in many ways. Baseball uniforms and baseball caps have inadvertently become a preferred choice when going out. Even if you have not really played baseball, surely you have heard of the term "home run."

What is Baseball?

This competitive ball game may seem slow-paced at first, but once you get started, you'll feel like you've opened the door to a whole new world and will fall in love with this team sport.

Baseball traces its roots back to the 15th century, its predecessor was paddle ball, which was popular in England at that time. In fact, it is not as complicated as imagined.

Simply put, in a baseball game, the offensive team hits the ball with a bat and scores by running the bases; the defense team catches and passes the ball to prevent the offensive team from scoring. When the defending team successfully gets three of the offensive team players out, the two teams switch offensive and defensive roles.

In a baseball game, each team needs at least nine people to play. There are the following positions on the defensive side: pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, left fielder, center fielder and right fielder. Each position has a different task. So if a team wants to win the game, they must rely on the joint efforts of all nine players; every role is important.

Sports have never been exclusive to men, and so is the case with baseball. Different from football and basketball, baseball has very few opportunities for body contact. Therefore, strength is not the only decisive factor, and this team sport does not have requirements or expectations for height and weight. In contrast, the flexibility of the body and a calm mind are the most important components, and many women are blessed with these qualities and abilities.

Women's Baseball in China

In China, women's baseball has already been around for a while. In 2018, the MLB Nanjing Baseball Development Center hosted the first MLB Women's Baseball Tournament, which attracted three women's baseball teams from Shanghai, Zhongshan and Hong Kong.

The organizer also planned a special support event with the theme #BaseballCinderella. Spectators could also watch live broadcasts of the event on the Tencent Sports platform, truly achieving gender equality in baseball.

In 2019, Hong Kong also hosted the International Women's Baseball Championship, where women's baseball teams from all over the world showcase their baseball performance.
