Long-time Shanghai resident Charlene Liu has been organizing various community events and fundraisers in the city for almost 15 years, including this Saturday's Red Ribbon Gala 2020 for World AIDS Day at the Andaz Xintiandi, Shanghai. We caught up with her to find out more.
What is the Red Ribbon Gala?
The Red Ribbon Gala is the signature year-end fundraiser for World AIDS Day in Shanghai that benefits Shanghai Qingai Health Center. Shanghai Qingai Health Center is an established organization dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention amongst youths, providing medical and counseling services and advocating for the elimination of discrimination and stigmatization of those who are affected.
How did you get involved in the event?
I knew about the Red Ribbon Gala organized by some of my friends shortly after I arrived in Shanghai. However, when they left, there were a few years when it was not held. One of them came back to Shanghai and in 2015 asked me to help him to kick start it again.
This year will be the 5th Red Ribbon Gala since 2015 (we skipped 2018). Unlike previous years, we have a special theme – Glitz & Glam – so we expect guests to come in their most glitzy and glamorous outfit. There will be prizes to be won for the best dressed guests!
What can people expect this year?
There will be a 4-course dinner with special entertainment. A celebrity will be in our midst, but I’m not giving any spoilers here. There are over 100 raffles prizes to be won, ranging from F&B vouchers to hotel stays and jewelry. Then there is celebrity autographed memorabilia for auction.
Sounds like a fab night! How do people get involved?
Buy a seat or a table, come and join the fun and contribute to the fundraiser. You can also donate directly to the organization. Last but not least, we are looking for volunteers to help with planning, setup and on-site tasks. Add the WeChat: Qevents茜侬文化 to find out more.
