That's right, it's termite season in Shanghai. Unfortunately, the hot and humid weather is perfect conditions for the pesky insects.
"The termite invasion outbreak started in late May and will last until around July 10," said Zhang Shengqi, director of the Xufang Greenery and Termite Control Center in Xuhui District. "The extreme peak is due around the plum rain season, a period known for damp, sultry weather, as the pest favors a humid environment," he told Shine.

According to exterminators, the flying pests are most active from noon to 3pm, and love wood, which means residents living in Shanghai's old wooden houses will likely get some unwelcome visitors this summer.
"Some termites spotted in old houses are flying in from street side trees, parks, gardens and greenery," said Zhang. "They establish colonies."
If your house is getting swarmed, try covering cracks in doors and walls. If that doesn't help, it might be time to call in the exterminators, who use chemicals and sprays to keep the bugs at bay.
