That's Shanghai takes a look at the best nightlife events on this weekend...
Jan 2: The Fur
Flyer courtesy of promoter
Playing around with the idea of comedy and performance, The Fur’s music can be described as synthpop, dream pop or indie pop. The group released a pair of singles this year and will hop on stage at Mao Livehouse this month.
Jan 2, 8pm; RMB90-120. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Jan 3: Alex Wang
Flyer courtesy of promoter
After debuting on Howie Lee's music label Do Hits with his EP Black Dragon in 2017, Shanghai-based producer Alex Wang has continued to explore his unique futuristic club sound, which shows traces of nu-metal, black metal and sci-fi influences.
Jan 3, 10pm; RMB40 presale, RMB60 door. ALL Club. See event listing. Tickets.
Jan 3: The Last Love Bang Ever on Xingfu Lu
Flyer courtesy of promoter
One final Love Bang before Dada Shanghai becomes a group home for ghosts and street cats! Love Bang started here on Xingfu Lu in 2010 and we finish just like we started: house-party-in-the-club vibes all nite and a crudely-drawn, highly-emotional flyer. Music: sounds to make you fall off the ground and land on the ceiling. Club trax? Hip hop? Everything? Depends on the moon!
Jan 3, 10pm; free entry. Dada. See event listing.
Jan 3: 44KW Pres. Shaun Reeves
Flyer courtesy of promoter
Internationally acclaimed DJ, producer and label owner Shaun Reeves is bringing his Michigan-grown techno and house vibes to 44KW this week. Joining Reeves are DJ EBP, Thomas Futoso, Johnny B. Goode and Fat-K.
Jan 3, 10pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 door. 44KW. See event listing. Scan the QR code on the flyer for tickets.
Jan 4: Say Yes 2020 Opening Party: Randomer
Flyer courtesy of promoter
Getting back into the swing of things early, Say Yes invite British DJ and producer Randomer to ALL Club. Few have a recent back catalog as rich and diverse as Randomer. His discography reads like a who’s who of modern techno: across a six-year career, he’s produced four EPs for Untold’s Hemlock Recordings; released records for Hessle Audio, Numbers and Clone; and most recently, been cherrypicked for Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S.
Jan 4, 10pm; price TBA. ALL Club. See event listing.
Jan 4-5: Mike Moreno Quartet
Flyer courtesy of promoter
In 2007, Mike released his debut recording as a leader, Between The Lines, which Nate Chinen deemed in the New York Times as one of his top 10 Jazz albums of 2007. Mike returned to producing his records on his own with World Culture Music for Another Way (2012), which was chosen by iTunes for the Best of 2012 list. His most recent recording Lotus was released at the end of 2015.
Jan 4-5, 7.30pm (Jan 4), 6.30pm (Jan 5); RMB160-320. Blue Note Shanghai. See event listing. Tickets.
Jan 4: Gully Riddim
Flyer courtesy of promoter
Gully Riddim is a party focusing on dubstep, grime and drumtrax, run by Grime/Club music producer Zean and Genome's Kilo Vee. Taking club music back to the basics, Gully Riddim presents itself as opposed to experimentation, certainly not highbrow and all about creating a good, chill, welcoming vibe.
Jan 4, 9pm; free entry. Dada. See event listing.
Jan 4: Small Storm Tour
Flyer courtesy of promoter
Bringing together some of the best punk bands that the country has to offer, this tour presents Shanghai audiences with Beijing favorites Wasted Laika, Hangnail and Xiao Wang, while locals Poetry in Shorts will also chop it up on stage.
Jan 4, 9pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 door. Yuyintang Park. See event listing. Tickets.
