Nov 6: Celeste

Experimental French metal band Celeste play an ethereal, punishing mix of post-hardcore, black metal and doom music. They perform in total darkness with just red headlights and a strobe to match the utter brutality of their sound.

Nov 6: Ruth Koleva & The Fingertones

Think promising new musicians and Bulgaria may not be the first place that springs to mind. Yet the country’s deep traditions and long history have fed many a creative soul, and Ruth Koleva is definitely leading the current pack. Her debut album RUTH scooped the top prize at the Bulgarian Radio Awards in 2014, with hit-making producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga) declaring it amazing.

Nov 6: Bande

Bande (the side project of legendary avant-garde band IZ) recently released their first studio album, Goddess Umye. They bring a different vibe, playing old Chinese instruments like the dombra, kobyz, shaman drum, creating a mysterious ceremonial vibe in their live shows.

Nov 8: Never Young Beach

The first of a pair of Japanese acts on this list, Never Young Beach are best known for creating vibey surf rock (hence the beach?). The Speedstar Records band recently released their latest record, Story, has received good reviews. Relive warm weather and summer vibes with them at Modern Sky Lab this weekend.

Nov 8: Supermarket Live in Shanghai

Founded all the way back in 1996, Supermarket are well known as China’s first electronic band. Celebrating a whopping 23 years of life with this show at Bandai Namco this weekend, their 1998 album, Muyang (which translates to The Look or Appearance) was ranked as one of the best releases of that year by a number of music outlets. Catch them while you can.

Nov 8: Stand Up Comedy: Icelandic Invasion

On Friday November 8 the Shanghai Comedy Bunker presents an Icelandic special at Cages Bar and Sports as the venue gets raided by Icelandic vikings of comedy Helgi Steinar, Bjarni the Magician and Thorhallur Thorhallsson.
