A little over a year after opening a seaside, sand dune-inspired museum in Qinhuangdao in Hebei province, UCCA Center for Contemporary Art announced plans to open a third museum, this time in Shanghai’s Jing’an district.

The announcement came at the UCCA Gala 2019 on November 3, with UCCA proposing early 2021 as the opening date for the Shanghai site. The announcement builds on UCCA’s revitalization, after finding new patrons to help fund the center’s expansion a few years ago.

The museum will showcase Chinese and international art, while also being home to a project space for young artists.

This Shanghai-based museum will be built in collaboration with Hong Kong property company K. Wah International Holdings Ltd. The site will be spread over 5,000 square meters over three levels in an 86-meter-tall tower at the intersection of Qufu Lu and Xizang Lu on the banks of Suzhou Creek, nearby OCAT Shanghai’s newly opened space.

The new museum will be designed by New York-based architecture firm SO-IL and, like UCCA Dune, will aim to make use of pre-existing ecosystems. The project will be spearheaded by SO-IL co-founder Jing Liu, who was born in Nanjing.
