That's Shanghai takes a look at the best art exhibits on this weekend:
Bob Dylan Retrospectrum

Sure, Bob Dylan is a Nobel Prize winning writer, poet and lyricist, but his lesser known creative endeavors include painting with oil, acrylic and watercolor, and even include ironwork sculpture. Modern Art Museum, god bless their souls, are bringing more than 250 of Dylan’s works spanning over 40 years to Shanghai this weekend, opening on September 28. Dylan’s early ink experiments will show alongside the likes of works from Mondo Scripto sketches. Enjoy this fascinating insight into the creative polymath's works until January next year.
Until Jan 5, Modern Art Museum Shanghai.
Floating World – Genieve Figgis

Irish artist Genieve Figgis, who is known for her vibrant colors and ghoulish imagery, opens her fourth exhibition with Almine Rech, and the first in Shanghai, this weekend. Known for recreating old Victorian pictures with thick paint, so that the pictures subjects seem to be melting, her style is immediately recognisable and resembles a sort of Anglo-Irish gothic brand of painting.
Until Oct 19, Almine Rech.
L’invisible Vu – Group Exhibition

This excellent group exhibition brings together works from a range of artists who work within the realms of abstraction. As you can see from the image above, artists on show delve into appearances and how we tend to interpret personality, beauty and more. Works by artists like Hans Hartung, Jean Dubuffet and Josef Sima, among others, will be on show until October 20.
Until Oct 20, Minsheng Art Museum.
Ni Youyu & Hans Hartung – Concurrent Solo Shows

Having already opened a solo exhibition at Yuz Museum this month, Ni Youyu is a busy man. Here we get the opportunity to see some of his painted works, alongside more installations. Ni’s washed painting technique, which he formulated out of his unfamiliarity with canvas painting, offers viewers variegating views of the same image. Meanwhile, in the same space a look at the abstract works of Hans Hartung will open. Hartung is known as an important forerunner of lyrical abstraction, influencing a variety of artists before his death in 1989 with his idiosyncratic swirls, scratches and scribbles.
Until Oct 20, Perrotin.
Chalkroom (La Camera Insabbiata) – Laurie Anderson x Hsin-Chien Huang

Combining the unique skillsets of two very different artists from opposite ends of the globe, Chalkroom brings together New York performance artist and avant garde musician Laurie Anderson and Taiwan new media artist Hsin-Chien Huang for a virtual reality experience, blending together art and technology. The chalk mentioned in the name of this immersive exhibition gives reference to a blackboard, where images and words, like memory, are continually erased. Chalkroom premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2017 winning an award for Best VR Experience.
Until Oct 27; RMB100 weekdays, RMB120 weekends. Modern Art Base.

The first institutional solo exhibition on the Chinese mainland by bird-watching photographer Jean Luc Mylayne opens this weekend at Long Museum. Creating gorgeous photos by way of lens manipulation, Mylayne has been said to be the inheritor of the painter-photographer tradition by Time. His methods of preparation are legendary, as he works for months and years to capture singular photos. Catch his dreamy confabulations while you can.
Until Dec 8, Long Museum (West Bund).
