Now that it’s the middle of June, many are wondering when Shanghai’s annual plum rain season will arrive. According to experts, it looks like the season will come a bit late this year, reports Eastday.
With the combination of moist air over the Pacific and the cooler continental air mass, the plum rain season usually brings nonstop downpours to the city each summer. Lasting two to three weeks, the wet and humid season can be very stuffy with very little difference between high and low temperatures.
Over the last few days, the weather has been pleasant. The highs have hovered around 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and the lows are around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). It looks like this weather will continue for a few more days. “Shanghai won’t welcome the plum rain season for at least five to seven days based on our statistics,” claimed Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The bureau’s estimation is also backed up by The Weather Channel’s forecast. Expect cloudy skies and very little rain.

The late arrival of the plum rain season might actually be a good thing because once the rainy season ends, the city will be in the clutches of truly scorching heat, as well as typhoons.
Shanghai usually enters the plum rain season on June 17. In recent years, the earliest day Shanghai welcomed the season was on June 7 in 2008 and 2013. The latest date took place on June 27 in 2005.
Fun fact: The city embraced the season on the same day (June 19) during the past three years.
