After the incident, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration quickly dispatched two patrol vessels to maintain order on the river. A large portion of the West Bund was evacuated and sealed off. Approximately 20 meters of bank rails were badly damaged. Officials say that they will fix the railings as quickly as possible.
According to the investigation, the cargo boat, called Jingrui, suffered slight damage on its boat head. Fortunately, its navigation system is still in good shape and none of the staff members on the boat were hurt.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it turns out there was another boat that night which changed its sailing course without notifying the Jingrui boat. The two boats then collided with each other, which caused Jingrui to lose control and veer into the West Bund shore.
The incident is still under investigation.
