Final Episode of Game of Thrones Delayed by Tencent

Some end of world situations: alien life attacks our planet; global warming floods landmasses and cooks us alive; an asteroid strikes and wipes out the majority of sentient life on Earth; the final episode of Game of Thrones does not air on time.

Chinese viewers who were depending on Tencent Video to watch the last episode of the hugely popular TV show airing this morning were shocked and appalled to find that the streaming website was forced to delay the release of season eight, episode six for an unspecified amount of time.

The news has hit Westeros-loving netizens hard – and for good reason. We can only imagine the firestorm that Tencent is currently experiencing, as getting between a GOT fan and their weekly fix sounds a lot like trying to hold back the Army of the Dead.

For us, though, we’re just delighted that our WeChat moments will likely contain a few less spoilers today.

The episode was initially set to go online at 9am (CST) Monday morning. But at 8am, Tencent announced that the release would be delayed via one of their Weibo accounts (@腾讯美剧), which also stated that the delay has been caused by media transmission issues. As of press time, the episode still hasn’t been uploaded to Tencent Video.

Some netizens have speculated that the delay is a result of geopolitical tensions, with one user asking “Is it because of the China-US trade war?”

Other users on Weibo have demanded the streaming site refund their membership fees. Among the outrage, however, are plenty of humorous comments, with one netizen quoting the Septa Unella, writing “Shame, Shame Shame.”

Another user wrote “Tencent is worse than the scriptwriter.” Well... maybe not that bad.
