This month, 1862 Theatre will be hosting all sorts of poets, musicians and writers from around the world. 

May 10: Shuntarō Tanikawa

Poet and translator Shuntarō Tanikawa is one of the most widely read and highly regarded living Japanese poets and a frequent subject of speculations regarding the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tanikawa has written more than 60 books of poetry in addition to translating Charles Schulz's Peanuts and the Mother Goose rhymes into Japanese. He was nominated for the 2008 Hans Christian Andersen Award for his contributions to children's literature. 

Join Shuntarō Tanikawa, Cheng Bi and Kensaku Tanikawa for a night of literature, poetry and music on Friday May 10.

May 11: Athena Farrokhzad 

Born in Teheran, Farrokhzad is an instructor in the writing program at Nordens folk high school on the island of Biskops-Arnö in Lake Mälaren. In 2013, Farrokhzad published a collection of poems titled Vitsvit (White Blight) with Albert Bonniers Förlag. The same year, she made her debut as a playwright. White Blight, Jennifer Hayashida's translation of Vitsvit, was published by Argos Books in 2015. It was shortlisted for the 2016 National Translation Awards in Poetry, named one of Boston Globe's best poetry books of 2016, and reviewed by numerous publications, including Slate. As of 2018, Vitsvit has been translated into 12 languages.

May 12: Ales Steger

Aleš Šteger is a Slovenian poet, essayist and novelist. Aleš belongs to a generation of writers that started publishing right after the fall of Yugoslavia. His first poetry collection Šahovnice ur (1995) sold out in just three weeks and marked a new generation of Slovenian artists and writers. Štegers books have been translated into 16 languages and his poems have appeared in internationally renown magazines and newspapers such as The New Yorker. Among other prizes and honors, his English translation of Knjiga reči (Thee Book of Things) won two major US translation awards (BTBA award and AATSEL). Special guests include Cuban poet, journalist, literary critic and translator Victor Rodriguez Nunez; German poet, editor and translator Alexander Gumz; and Chinese poet Zhai Yongming.

May 25: Caché Dans Son Buisson De lavande, Cyrano Sentait Bon La Lessive

Looking for a family-friendly activity? Check out this rendition of Rebecca Dautremer's popular children's book. The performance is bound to be entertaining and full of laughs. There will be two showtimes on May 25 at 2pm and 7:30pm. (Note: The show will be in French with Chinese captions.)
