May 2: Mau Mau vs. Heatwolves

Baijiu Robot is back in action! What happens when the powers of Yoshi have combined with three kinds of baijiu, Jackie Chan, Wang Wang snacks, CDJs, Liqun cigs and a Volkswagen Santana? Let's find out! Ten years on, Heatwolves (Love Bang, Hologram Dreams, Baijiu Robot) and Mau Mau (Elevator, Medusa, Baijiu Robot) rejoin forces for a holiday evening of bangers. From acid classics to italo, broken techno and percussive club tracks, expect heady blends and a lot of dancefloor sweat.

May 2: Boiler Room Shanghai

Boiler Room is back in action after a sad, but necessary, hiatus! Whoopee! On Thursday May 2, they'll be linking us to the Western world for an epic night of underground music in the first event in a very welcome return.

May 3: Popasuda and Triplet

The Shanghai favorite for dancehall is joined by 4y-year-old, Berlin-based Afro-dancehall artist Triplet this holiday. He's worked on productions and remixes with the likes of Walshy Fire from Major Lazer, Ayo Jay, Timaya and Edanos from Nigeria, Rashelle Blue from Ghana, Latifah from the Netherlands, Aidonia and Agent Sasco from Jamaica, so expect a night of global sounds and eclectic bass.

May 3: Do Hits 8th Anniversary Party

Since they formed in 2011, electronic music collective Do Hits have seen their influence spread from their hometown of Beijing to across China. With monthly club nights, electronic music publishing and a unique visual identity, their 8th-anniversary party promises to be the culmination of their work to date, with live AV sets from Howie Lee and Teom Chen, Jason Hou and Miao Jing alongside Alex Wang and Chillchill.

May 3: Amber Akilla

Grab your favorite friendo for a night of feels and fun - Amber Akilla is bringing through a whole bunch of bad ass babes putting on everything from hip hop and R&B to k-pop and house. Because buds come first.

May 3-4: The Live Mixtape

Ever wonder what would happen if a top DJ directed a full concert with a live band. Well wonder no more! SMTH, Music Director of ASL Shanghai, is doing just that using SHAKE's six-piece band The Shanghai Sheiks and Courtney Knott. Expect wild tempo changes, vocals swapped over instrumentals, extended breaks, medleys and dance-floor madness. Expect a live blend of contemporary hip hop and r&b and classic funk and soul. Expect that, well, anything can happen! Except DJing. There will be no actual DJing.

May 3-5: Longines Global Champions Tour

The Longines Global Champions Tour is one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the world. During the global tour, jumping horses from Europe and the Americas compete in cities all around the world. The event will stop off right here in Shanghai from May 3-5. Every year, the world’s top riders and nearly 100 top horses attend the Shanghai Longines Global Champions Tour. The three-day event will attract over 25,000 people and over 10 million viewers on Chinese TV. Just like last year, the China (Shanghai) International Horse Fair will be held at the same time for those who’d like to check it out.

May 4: Skrillex

DJ, producer and Grammy award winner Skrillex is headed back to Shanghai. The former lead singer of screamo band From First to Last hits Shanghai a few times a year, so catch him on his first round at the rowdy ass club over in Found 158.

May 4-5: One Starry Night: Out of the Blue

One Starry Night: Out of the Blue takes you and your family on a journey filled with art, music and culture. This magical event is the perfect way to introduce your little ones to a whole new world. The event will take place at Lyceum Theatre on May 4-5. You'll get to explore and interact with 28 different works of art painted by nine masters including Van Gogh, Monet, Da Vinci, Wang Xi Meng and more. If your kids are musically inclined, they can appreciate piano concerts composed by the likes of Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Grieg and more. By exploring such a fun and joy-filled environment, your children will be inspired to learn more about the beauty of art and music.

May 5: Cinco De Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is here and there are too many events to put in this list so we made another one just for the holiday! Some are more tequila filled than others, but if nothing else, you've got a great excuse to go eat some Mexican food and celebrate the country's 1865 victory in the Battle of Puebla (not Independence Day - that's in September).


May 9: Explosions in the Sky

New Noise proudly presents a night with the iconic instrumental band Explosions in the Sky. They're passionate and powerful, equal parts romance and tragedy, with beautiful melodies that ignite, turning into head-spinning walls of noise. Easily one of the most intense live bands to take the stage in recent years, their sound proves to be every bit as triumphant as their name implies.

May 10: 90s Pub Quiz

Calling all 90s lovers. Friday, May 10 night will see a quiz covering all things of that decade at The Camel. RMB150 gets you entry to the quiz along with a fish & chips, chicken parma or pesto pasta, plus a drink. As always, there will be great prizes on offer, and if all that is not enough, it will be happy hour for the duration!

May 10: Phill Jupitus

Phill Jupitus began his performing career in 1984, when he quit working in a job center to become a performance poet, rising to prominence supporting such artists as Billy Bragg, The Style Council, and The Housemartins. In the 90’s, his poetry turned into comedy, and Jupitus started performing at stand-up gigs all over London and the UK, going on to earn himself a Time Out award in 1994. Jupitus became a familiar face with his big TV break in 1996, when he became a regular team captain on BBC2’s Never Mind The Buzzcocks, and now he's bringing all of that jazz through to Shanghai.

May 10-12: Beernanza

Beernanza! A three-day extravaganza dedicated to all things beer. This'll be the sixth time Bevex organizes Shanghai's biggest beer festival in the Okura Garden Hotel. It's a must for fans of the hoppy nectar. There'll be something like 150 different craft and premium beers from China and the world present, with 45 music groups playing across three live music stages, and a bunch of prizes to win at games and competitions. Plus chances to brew your own beer and the Bear Olympics, hosted by the giant stuffed bears running around during the event.

May 11: Industrial Injection

Inferno's brought back Industrial Injection for a second time 'round. Expect a night of cold heavy murderous machinaphile industrial music all night long at Shanghai's most famous metal bar.

May 15: Jason Mraz

Multiple Grammy Award winning artist Jason Mraz is bringing his Good Vibes Tour to Shanghai. Mraz came onto the scene the early-2000s and quickly became known for his soulful folk-pop. Throughout his career, Mraz has earned numerous platinum certifications for his various releases, made pop history with his record-breaking singles, ‘I’m Yours’ and ‘I Won’t Give Up,’ won two Grammy Awards, received the prestigious Songwriter Hall of Fame Hal David Award, and sold out amphitheaters and arenas across the globe. He’s also become known for his positive message and upbeat tunes and humorous live shows.

May 17: Timber Timbre

Canadian freak-folk and psychedelic-folk music group Timber Timbre is coming to perform in Shanghai as part of their China 2019 Tour. Hailing from Toronto, the mastermind behind the band is Taylor Kirk. The frontman has a powerful, arresting-veering-on-creepy presence on stage, with theatrical gestures counterbalanced with restrained, deep and smooth vocals to create their signature raggedy, swampy blues sound that seems to ascend from an alternate universe.

May 17: Daya

Daya – which means ‘compassion’ in Sanskrit – started playing the piano at age 3. By the time she was 11, she was proficient in piano, guitar, the sax and even the ukulele. The 20-year-old Grammy award winning songstress first started making waves in the music scene after the release of her eponymous EP in 2015. The EP received all sorts of attention and included major hits such as “Hide Away.”

May 22-23: Jesus and Mary Chain

Since their long-awaited reunion in 2007, The Jesus and Mary Chain have released several Greatest Hits compilations, as well as a new studio album Damage and Joy. The alt-rock band continues to shake up the music scene and will play across China for the first time in seven years this month.

May 23-24: Sophie Zelmani

Swedish singer/songwriter Sophie Zelmani lands in Shanghai this spring as part of her Sunrise Tour. Since the release of her self-titled debut album in 1995, audiences around the globe have lauded Zelmani's whispery folk-pop songs about life and love.

May 25: China Social Club's Fifth Birthday
