That's Shanghai takes a look at the best shows on this week:

Apr 24: Peter Piek

The German artist Peter Piek is a jack of all trades - a painter, writer and performance artist, there’s not much he can’t do. With his high vocal range and folksy sound, his music is unique and often compared to auditory painting. Best to give him a listen yourself, but we think it’s likely to be a soulful and intimate show at Yuyintang.

Apr 24, 8.30pm, RMB20 pre-sale, RMB80 door. Yuyintang, see event listing.

Apr 25: Sascha & Laurent

This improvisational jazz duo from Luxembourg are in Shanghai for one night and one night only. Expect the unexpected in an all out affront to the senses with intense vocals from Sascha and deep ranging bass from Laurent.

Apr 25, 8pm, RMB60 pre-sale, RMB80 door. Yuyintang, see event listing.

Apr 26: Gatti and the Gang

They did it before and now they’re doing it again - Cristina Gatti of Postmodern Jukebox is doing another set at The McKinnon or updated jazz standards and real’ good tunes. Their last show sold out so quickly they decided to put on another one, just for all of y’all. Catch her while you can, Leonardo Di Caprio style.

Apr 26, 10.30pm, RMB280, RMB3,500 VIP. The McKinnon Hotel, see event listing.

Apr 27: Descendents

The Descendents are coming to China, and anyone who reads that and doesn’t want to run to the nearest mosh pit or mug of coffee is in dire need of a crash course in “punk 101”. The Descendents, who formed in 1977, are the earliest pioneers of US pop punk and have been at the forefront of the west coast hardcore punk movement since its genesis in the late 1970s. Founding drummer, Bill Stevenson, is one of the most recognizable and respected drummers of the genre having played for Black Flag during their most daring and genre bending years. As always, with a wrist band you get a free drink at Specters after the show, so consider hitting the after party if you’re up for it.

Apr 27, 9pm, RMB280 pre-sale, RMB330 door. Yuyintang Park, see event listingbuy tickets.

Apr 28: Jasmine Chen

If you're not into jazz but her name sounds familiar - it probably is. The singer’s tracks are featured multiple times on the Crazy Rich Asians soundtrack, and Chen’s become one of the leading figures in China’s jazz scene for her swingin’ takes on traditional songs.

Apr 28, 7.15pm, RMB180-580. Shanghai Oriental Art Center, see event listing, buy tickets.

Apr 29: Warbly Jets

Drawing heavily on influences from 1980s Los Angeles bands like Dream Syndicate and The Byrds, Warbly Jets bring a neo-psychedelic sound to the stage this month. On their well-received latest EP Propaganda, they’ve been delving into a more electro-centric modus operandi to record their thoughts on consumerism, social media and modern America.

Apr 29, 8.30pm, RMB160 pre-sale, RMB220 door. Yuyintang Park, see event listingbuy tickets.

Apr 29 - May 2: JZ Spring Fest

Ranging from blues to funk and Latin fusion to R&B, it’s a diverse and impressive lineup that’ll turn any pair of ordinary sneakers into dancing shoes.
