As part of the ongoing redevelopment of Jing'an District, F&B hub Zhang Court occupants have recently been notified that they will need to close up shop.
The historic shikumen-style complex is home to popular venues such as Logan's Punch, Tomatito, Tap House, El Ocho, Oji Cocktail & Whisky, and others.
The general consensus among the business owners is that they were completely blindsided by this development. A representative from Tomatito told us that they just got the "surprise invitation to move out on Friday" and they are still dealing with the current contract, which hasn't expired. They emphasized that they are not closing but will be looking to relocate. Let's hope that all is not lost because a few other venues told us anonymously that they were also looking for new locations.
This news comes hard for those who anticipated completing the (in some cases up to three) years remaining on their existing contracts. One restaurateur mentioned that some of their "costs will never be recovered."
If this hits you hard, make sure and get to your favorite Zhang Court bars and restaurants as often as you can in the coming weeks. We are hearing different things in regards to the actual closing date, although several people have told us they think it will be the end of April (or perhaps May).
Over at Taste & See, Kang Yang Lim says, "it's not over until the fat lady sings." They will stay open until the very end, so head to the Melbournian cafe for your roast dinner and pavlova needs ASAP.
If nothing else, we have several 'drink the bar dry' closing parties to look forward to.
