Mar 1: Video Game Orchestra

Video game music? Live? And in concert? Just look at that crowd too - damn, man. These musicians are all about actualizing the potentional of gaming soundtracks through epic, orchestral performances, and they've been pretty successful in their quest. It's raw, energetic and definitely not your average Friday night.

Mar 1: jan and naomi

The duo first met in one of Tokyo's hippest districts, which isn't that surprising given their look and sound. Having played Fuji Rock with several EPs under their belt, jan and naomi have well-practiced their hypnotic, shoegazey sound for years now, in what's likely to be an eerie, emotional show at Yuyintang on Friday.

Mar 1: Rob Smith AKA RSD

The Bristol legend, Rob Smith returns with his signature heavy dub reggae/trip hop/jungle sounds. This is definitely a go-to for fans of Massive Attack, Tricky, Pinch, Addison Groove and so many others. Plus Kyle is opening! Hey Kyle! (If SmartShanghai can do shout outs, why can't we?)

Mar 1: Break The Wall

If you haven't checked out that new club in Found, 44KW, yet, this right here is your excuse to do so. Their sound system is insane - seriously, it looks like it's some kind of spaceship or something - and they're bringing through some European house DJs on Friday, so what more can you really ask for? Also they make proper drinks. Like, a well stocked bar. No joke.

Mar 1: POMO and Harrison Brome

DJ Pomo and singer Harrison Brome tare kicking things up at Arkham for a live set this Friday. Pomo is a Canadian born multi-instrumentalist now residing in Montreal, and has taken the electronic music scene by the collar, dragging it back onto the dance floor with dreamy synths, glittery arpeggios, buoyant beats and twangy samples. Brome's all about that bedroom pop RNB vibe, so should be a good one if you're looking to burn a few calories.

Mar 1-2: Bar Rouge Grand Re-Opening

Bar Rouge is back and better than ever for their grand re-opening this weekend. Table bookings encouraged, both nights they'll be puttin' on their standard shenanigans in a brand new glitzed out get up.

Mar 2: Kate Wood Renovation Party

Shanghai's favorite watch and lifestyle brand Kate Wood just renovated their Wulumuqi Lu location and are throwing a party to celebrate. They'll have Peddler's cocktails, get 40 percent off select items and some other fun surprises.

Mar 2: MONO

This Japanese instrumental band has toured all around the world for 20 years and picked up loads of inspiration on the way. Influenced by classical composers such as Beethoven, as well as noise bands like My Bloody Valentine and Neurosis, the group succeeds in creating an intense and dynamic sound that transcends genres.

The Shanghai-based soulful rock band is back for a show at Lofas this weekend. Get geared up for a rich vocals and a solid jam sesh.

Mar 2: Medusa

Celebrate the marvelllllllllllous Michael's birthday, bringing her legendary butch queens, femme queens and kings of the ball onto the dance-floor to ring in the year of the pig. Expect an ultimate night of sickening realness with special performances from Diamond Lil, Mau Mau and lots of glitter.

Mar 2: M.A.N.D.Y

The dance music powerhouse M.A.N.D.Y., consisting of childhood friends Philipp Jung and Patrick Bodmer, are consolidating their success in China by performing at Celia for a lively night of mind-blowing techno and house rhythms. Revel in the beats of special supporting acts Emil Chang, Marcos Godoy, Ivan Barbero, Jeff Chong, Cice, Lina K and VJ Ming Ming for the ultimate Saturday night of raving.

Mar 2: Alter. and Alex from Tokyo (Innervision / Berlin)

Get excited about the first weekend of Spring with a night of upbeat and funky tunes played by the renowned and talented Tokyo-raised and Berlin-based DJ, sound designer and music producer Alex From Tokyo. Enzo Grasso and Allan Marshall will also be there to give dancers an ultimate groovy night of excitement and fun.

Mar 6-9: Design Shanghai

Calling all interior designers, developers, retailers and lovers of all things aesthetic: Design Shanghai is coming back this March for its sixth edition at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Bringing in over 400 international brands from 32 countries, you'll be able to see the best, brightest and newest developments (and products) in the industry, in what's become Asia's largest design event.

Mar 7: All About Love Speaks Forever: Yayoi Kusama

It's finally here! Opening March 7, The Fosun Foundation will see the long-awaited Yayoi Kusama solo show. The polka dot princess has designed a number of works specifically for the space, alongside massive paintings and installations covering some of her most recent practice.

Mar 7: Yung Bae

Taking inspiration from Japanese pop and all things internet, this 21st century bedroom hip hop artist has been flooding the headphones of sad girls and boys for years now. His sample-heavy disco-infused tracks are perfect for window gazing, long bus rides through foreign cities and dusk-time daydreaming.

Mar 8: Lil' Yachty

Atlanta-born rapper Miles Parks McCollum, aka Lil' Yachty or Lil' Boat, is bringing his good vibes to Arkham. Known for his prominent social media following, expect trippy bars of mumble rap, from a guy who has no time for convention and rules.

Mar 9: R U OK Day

Everyone feels lonely and lost sometimes, especially when youíre trying to build a home away from home, but resources like Lifeline Shanghai have dedicated time and space to help those who need it. R U OK Day is designed to help you discuss and discover how to live your best life. Theyíll be offering assorted workshops and forums for meaningful conversations, giving you and your loved ones the tools to make a difference in the lives of those around you.

Mar 9: Whale Fall

Instrumental post-rock group Whale Fall fuses elements of dream pop, new wave, folk and classic rock in their most recent 10 track cinematic release. Sondersongs draws on the understanding that passersby live vivid, complex lives as complicated as your own in an album mirroring an epic realization weíve all had at one point in our lives. Theyíll be performing the album live at Yuyintang Livehouse in what promises to be an emotional show.

Mar 9: We Are Shanghai: Volume 6

The annual open pan-genre music compilation project We Are Shanghai returns with a live performance of this yearís featured artists at a non-profit show. This yearís compilation (the 6th Volume) is presented as a time capsule of art and expression, celebrating the multi-creative musical atmosphere of Shanghai. The compilation will also be issued in the form of double cassettes, which will include a download code. Four hundred cassettes will be distributed over Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and other Chinese cities. More information regarding times and sets will be released online this month.

Mar 12: Rita Ora

British singer-songwriter and actress Rita Ora is cementing her status as a force of nature in the world of pop music by performing her debut show on the Chinese mainland in Shanghai as part of her Phoenix World Tour. Having sold over 7 million singles in total and having her five latest singles streamed over a billion times on Spotify, expect a hotly-anticipated and exciting show at the Bandai Namco Shanghai Dream Hall with performances of well-known tunes such as 'How We Do (Party),' 'I Will Never Let You Down' and 'Poison.'

Mar 14: HONNE

The West England electronic-soul duo are back in Shanghai for a sold out show this months. While tickets might be gone, if you've already booked be sure to mark it on your calendar or keep an eye out for re-sellers.

Mar 14-27: Shanghai International Literary Festival 2019

Shanghai's favorite literary event is back! Returning for another year to Glam and M on The Bund, M Restaurant Groupís long-running Shanghai International Literary Festival will once again be inviting dozens of award-winning and best-selling authors to the city to speak about their latest works and share their love, habits and routine of writing and reading with the audience. Mar 15: JMSN

Christian Berishaj signed with Universal Motown back in 2008, and while heís no longer with the label, when listening to his new album Velvet, you can still hear the distinct funk that brought him there. R&B through and through, his soul-laden tracks will have you grooviní in no time. Having opened for Kendrick Lamar and garnering praise from industry legend like Usher, heís more than earned his stripes and is gracing Yuyintang for an emotional show this month.

Mar 15: Gang of Four

The British band has been playing live shows since 1977, and is considered one of the most radical rock groups of the last 30 years. Theyíre energetic, aggressive and iconic, with tickets likely to sell out before their scheduled gig at MAO Livehouse.  They served as an influence to the likes of Massive Attack, INXS and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, so if any of those bands tickle your fancy, you might want to look into checking out this show.

Mar 16: Amadou & Mariam

Amadou and Mariam met almost 30 years ago at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako, Mali, and have been making music together ever since. Having released chart-topping albums in the French Pop realm, theyíre bringing their upbeat contemporary Afro-Cuban sound to Shanghai for a bluesy afternoon show at Modern Sky Lab.

Mar 17: The Nutcracker

Christmas might be over, but this holiday classic never goes out of season. The Nutcracker is one of the most famous ballets in the world, with film, animated and literary renditions a plenty. This March, you can see it live in theatres, as Clara and her nutcracker take to the stage alongside sugarplum fairies, mice and many other magical characters.

Mar 17: Be A Legend

The home of Sleep No More will be putting on an immersive karaoke experience later this month in what looks like a full-on, flashy party. We're not really sure what to expect, but the McKinnon has yet to let us down, so this is on out list of things do to.

Mar 17: The Underground Youth

Taking influence from The Velvet Underground and Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Manchester founded band's take on old school psychedelic rock is one to be reckoned with. Their moody, raw post-punk has sold-out shows across Europe, putting on a performance that would fit right in on a Woodstock stage.

Mar 22-23: Tom Odell

Ivor Novello-winning British singer-songwriter Tom Odell is at the top of his game, having attained an impressive 1.8 million album sales and 10 million single sales worldwide. Known for his emotionally raw lyrics and grandstanding melodies, the singing sensation will present his honest and personal album Jubilee Road.

Mar 29-31: SAJAMJAM Kids Show

China's most popular musical kids show is headed back to Shanghai. Before the show, everyone in the audience receives a SAMAJAM Music Bag containing three musical instruments: a frame drum, drumsticks and a musical tube. Throughout the show, kids and the entire family learn and play with the instruments, as they are led by SAMAJAM performers on stage. Itís called the SAMAJAM Kids Show, but parents and even grandparents are sure to have fun too. Moreover, the 200 percent participatory experience allows parents to create an exceptional moment of partnership, cooperation and harmony with their kids.

Mar 30: Tropical China

This innovative live show brings to life the debut album of avant-garde musical project Tropical China. Consisting of a cross-cultural collaboration of Chinese and Brazilian artists, producers and record labels. Expect the abstract vibe of the Shanghai-based band 33EMYBW and the ambient sounds of GOOOOOSE, as well as Rio de Janeiroís Ava Rocha and Negro Leo, and much more.

Mar 30: Claude Monet New Impressionistic – The Track of Time Art Exhibition 3.0

This exhibition offers art lovers an extraordinary opportunity to be close to one of the greatest paintersí works in a modern, immersive way. Based on its original content and utilizing a host of different technologies, the exhibition combines some of the latest techniques such as 3D mapping, intelligent interactive devices and installation art to create an immersive art exhibition experience. This exhibition has set up a special zone with cooperative copies authorized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and also includes a cooperation with a top international shadow design team to create a 5D shadow exhibition for its audiences. It also includes a small Monet exhibition for children.
