That's Shanghai Sports Awards Nominees: Personality of the Year

Shanghai sports friends, here we go again. The Camel and That’s Shanghai 9th Annual Sports Awards will take place on February 21. Once a year, we gather to recognize those who have truly made their mark on the city’s amateur sports scene: from the home-run hitters and KO punchers, to those who lift up their mates when all seems lost. They’re our friends, our family and, occasionally, our blood-thirsty rivals.

There are 16 awards across six categories in the general selection, plus three Under 18s categories with 12 awards to be won, with big prizes from F45 and REVO up for grabs. There will also be a raffle fundraiser on the night, with all money raised from that going to the Baobei Foundation.

And now, without further ado, here are the nominations for Personality of the Year:

Softball, Dodgeball and more! - Phil Van Camerik

One of the driving forces behind the Shanghai Thundersharkz, Phil Van Camerik is known for far more than his skill on the softball field. Phil is the league commissioner of the well-known Shanghai Dodgeball League, and recently led his team to victory in the recent season. Off the field (and court), Phil is unrivaled in his ability to promote sporting events, contributing to the overall popularity of many big-name events in Shanghai, such as the World Cup, the SuperBowl, and the Shanghai Masters, to name a few. Both a fierce competitor and intense sports fan, Phil’s personality is warm-hearted and incredibly easy-going, making him one of the most approachable people in Shanghai’s booming sports scene. For his incredible personality, athletic prowess and leadership, and his love for all things sports, Phil Van Camerik should be this year’s Sports Personality of the Year.

FitFam - Harriet Gaywood

Harriet not afraid to roll up her sleeves! From leading five FitFam workouts weekly to Den leader for Boy Scouts, CSR / Charity work with Fresh Start Rotary Club, FitHearts and Shanghai Young Bakers; between full time professional and family life, Harriet also manages to squeeze in ‘casual' 100km trail races. Harriet is one determined and inspiring woman, who single-handedly took FitFam across the river to help build a meaningful community in Pudong and make fitness accessible to more people. Harriet motivates Shanghai-ren of all ages to live healthier and happier lives.

Dolphins Rugby – “Handsome” Josh Morgan

Handsome Josh was the life of the party in 2018, leading the team on international tours and leading the team massively astray. His smile and charisma touched the hearts of each and every Dolphin. Let the farewell tour begin!

Shanghai Tigers (AFL) - Toby Dickson

His passion unbridled, his celebrations epic – Toby gives his all to the club, whether it be running around the training field, leaping for epic marks or celebrating with his teammates, the wonderful Toby Dickson smile is always plastered across his face. Positive and encouraging, even when people make mistakes, Toby is loved for his great all-around personality. And when China were victorious in winning the Asian Champs Plate, he was leading celebrations with more excitement than a groom on his wedding night!

Women’s Football (SWIFC) - Mariel Dryden

Mariel has been a key member of Shanghai Women’s International Football Club since its inauguration as well as an important player to the team. Her knowledge of the game and friendliness has helped SWIFC in the brunt of games and tournaments. She’s a player that can control the midfield, can leap forward and provide strikers with that crucial touch and assist upfield while still contributing to some peachy goals herself; it’s a chemistry she learns quickly with the forwards while working back to help in defense, too. Always smiling and social, she's also the first to lend a helping hand and a great head to have on the field when you’re down.

SRFC - Matt

Vision, direction and winning others over are often used to describe the qualities that make a good leader. But what about humility? Modesty? Compromise? Matt exudes all these qualities on and off the pitch as Club Captain for the three teams that make up Shanghai RFC. A big club contains big personalities and even bigger egos, but Matt's natural qualities allow him to (in his words) 'firefight' successfully, ensuring the club enjoys a happy, productive and successful season. Without him the club could be one of cliques, grudges and hostility. But led by Matt, it is one of vision, direction and dedication. On the pitch he leads by example and often finds himself as the hero who snatches victory from the jaws of defeat with a well timed step or break. Off the pitch he finds himself the jack of all trades, plugging gaps in training, governance, or socially. Matt is a man of duty, and when duty calls Matt usually has already answered.
