It is no secret that Shanghai is waging a continuous war against traffic disobedience. Previously, the local police have employed multiple measures to bust jaywalkers, and now they have set their eyes on bike and e-bike riders who have crossed the line… literally, reports Shine.
According to traffic law, bikes and e-bikes should stop behind the white line when the red light is on. That being said, a great number of riders tend to cross the line so that they can have a head start when the light turns green, which bears menace to both pedestrians who are trying to cross the road and motorists who are about to make a turn. This could result in serious accidents.
To put an end to this illicit behavior, Jing' An police have taken initiative and trialed a new surveillance camera at the crossroads of Gonghe Xin Lu and Zhonghua Xin Lu. Installed with latest facial recognition software, the smart cameras can automatically track down the offenders and send their information to the police.

Those who defy the new regulation will receive a fine of RMB30 via text message and regular post. If they ignore the ticket and refuse to pay the fine, the police will seek them out in person. Moreover, repeat offenders will lose credit in the national credit system.

Since the new system went online at the end of last year, the traffic police have busted over 30 offenders. For the next phase, police have advised that they are considering integrating the function into previous cameras which focus on jaywalkers. Meanwhile, they will introduce the system to more parts of the city.
