That's Shanghai takes a look at some of the week's best upcoming F&B events: 


Jan 8: el Willy Family Showtime

The el Willy family is throwing down tonight at Tomatito, Mexican style! They've flown in chefs from their other Asian locations to cook you sexy tapas at Tomatito. Two teams will compete for ultimate bragging rights with Team #SexySeven led by Koen Vessies (Chef el Willy Group), team #DelayNoMore led by Alex Fargas (el Fofo by el Willy, La Paloma). Kohei (el Ocho)  and Ricky Sabata (La Paloma Hong Kong) will be shaking coctéls and as always, count on excellent service from the dream team!

Jan 9: Stone Brewing 1/9/19 Promo Sale

Did you know that January 9, 2019, is a drinking day? Apparently, yao jiu yao jiu (一九一九) meaning – as in the date 1/9/19 – in Chinese sounds very similar to yao jiu (要酒) meaning 'I want alcohol.' 

As such, Stone Brewing is discounting prices to RMB19 on 19 different Stone products all day long on January 9, 2019. This includes Stone White Geist Berliner Weisse crowlers, barrel-aged Arrogant Bastard Ale bottles, Stone Tangerine Express IPA,   Stone branded tote bags, and everything in between available in the Stone Brewing Tap Room or online through Eleme, Sherpas, Weidian, and Hema.

Jan 10-12: Pop Up Izakaya at Bird

The internationally renowned chef Mo Zhou is teaming up with Bird's own Chris Zu for a three-night Japanese pub-style izakaya pop up. Inspired by Japanese manga series Shinya Shokudo ('Midnight Diner'), the chefs are reinterpreting casual izakaya dishes with a fine dining approach. Expect a night of sake, beer and highball with dishes such as teriyaki glazed grilled chicken, pigeon katsu with homemade Worcestershire sauce and steamed forest rice.

Jan 11: Mardi Gras Madness at The Blind Pig and Pistolera Nanyang

Although Mardi Gras isn't officially until March this year, The Blind Pig and Pistolera are taking a head start to the festivities by throwing a Mardi Gras Madness themed party in the historical building of Legend & Co.! To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the True Legend Hospitality Group (Pistolera, The Blind Pig, Big Bamboo), they're offering finger food and free flow house wine, margaritas, craft beer and selected spirits from 7pm to 10pm. And they're asking you to come dressed in glam and sparkle. To top everything off, the night is filled with dance performances, a special guest DJ, raffle prizes and other promotions.

Jan 12: M Talks China | Panel on Food Waste in China

M Glam hosts a thought-provoking panel addressing the challenges that have come about as China's economy has become consumer-led. As a result, Chinese cities struggle to find ways to safely and economically manage the waste produced daily.  Major cities (like Beijing and Shanghai) produce more than 2,000 tons of food waste in a day. Expect a lively and important discussion on an issue that hits especially close to home.

Jan 12: All Star Bash at Big Bamboo Jinqiao

Shanghai's very first sports bar Big Bamboo is throwing an All Star Bash to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the True Legend Hospitality Group (Pistolera, The Blind Pig, Big Bamboo). They're celebrating with finger food, free flow drinks, a cheerleading performance, eating and drinking contests, raffle prizes, 50 percent off selected drinks after 10pm and gift bags for the early birds. The dress code is sports stars, so channel your inner athlete and head down to Big Bamboo Jinqiao for one beast of a party.

Jan 13: BottlesXO's Meet the Makers Wine Tasting

Led by Robert Oustric of the Marrenon winery in Luberon, France, who will share some of his vast wine knowledge while guiding you through a tasting of six curated wines. Jan 14: Osteria Chefs Collaboration Dinner

While the Oysterlicious amazing Chef Charity Dinner is already sold out (see event listing to join the waiting list), there are still spaces available at the chef collaboration dinner hosted by Osteria. Group executive chef Elijah Holland will be joined by Christopher Taylor (Osteria) and Canadian guest chef Matt Dean Pettit for a five-course meal with wine pairing. Wood roasted quail and lobster shrimp ceviche are just two of the delicious courses on offer.

Jan 15-17: The Sukhothai Bangkok Celebrity Chef David Tamburini Pop-up Event

This month, The Sukhothai Shanghai welcomes Executive Chef David Tamburini (of their sister hotel in Bangkok) to Shanghai for the first time, treating discerning diners a three-day culinary experience at La Scala. Expect signature dishes from the legendary Bangkok restaurant featuring seasonal ingredients and modern Italian culinary techniques. Choose from either a six-course dinner (with optional wine pairings) or three-course lunch and discover why La Scala at The Sukhothai Bangkok  has been praised as "the best Italian restaurant outside of Italy."

Jan 19: 2019 Chinese New Year Party

Social Supply is putting together a celebration of traditional Spring Festival culture combined with an exhibition of Western humanities and arts. There will be art exhibitions, dumpling classes, Chinese paper cutting workshops and plenty to eat and drink. Doesn't that sound like a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills and appreciate culture? Get your tickets before they sell out.

Jan 19: Long Live the King (Cake)!

Shanghai Young Bakers assists marginalized young Chinese adults who are unable to pursue traditional forms of education. One way to get involved is by joining one of their public or private booked baking classes, and this month they are eager to school you in the ways of baking a King's Cake. Led by Liu Dong (SYB, Marriot Hotel, EFBPa), the class includes lunch and all necessary ingredients.  All proceeds directly fund Shanghai Young Bakers’ programs. You must register ahead of the class.

Until Jan 31: Order Rosca de Reyes from El Luchador

Rosca de Reyes (ring of the kings) is a Spanish and Spanish American King's Cake pastry eaten to celebrate Epiphany. While traditionally enjoyed on January 6,  on Día de Reyes, you can order them from El Luchador Xintiandi until the end of January. Quantities are limited so get those orders in soon.
