It seems that illuminated zebra crossings and facial recognition technology are not enough to clamp down traffic disobedience. To stop the misbehavior once and for all, Shanghai traffic police have employed the ultimate solution, that is, to install barriers with automatic doors on both sides of the road, reports Shine.

Spotted at the intersection of Huancheng Dong Lu and Baziqiao Lu of Fengxian District, the barriers first appeared in late November. The doors are synchronized with the traffic lights and will open or shut while the lights turn green or red.

"Ever since these screen doors were applied, the rate for jaywalking at this intersection has descended by 78 percent," Jiang Zhonglei, Director of Community Safety in Fengpu sub-district told Shine. "For the next phase, we are going to introduce this system to other regions of Fengxian and other districts of Shanghai."

According to Jiang, they have considered all circumstances when designing the system. For instance, there is an emergency button on the side of the door which faces the street. If someone can't reach the other side of the street in time, they can still get through by pressing the button.

That being said, netizens still manage to find flaws in the system. "Is it really this effective? Those barbarians can still climb over the barrier or simply use the door that opens which is conveniently adjacent to the closed door." whines one netizen.

While there are still praises and claps regarding the new measure to battle jaywalking, a few netizens also seized the opportunity to mock the situation. "Feel sorry for the jaywalkers, now that they're fenced like cattles." one netizen teased on NetEase.
