That's Shanghai takes a look at the best parties of the week.
Oct 18: Drums with Lina K
Flyer courtesy of Celia.
There’s a reason Lina K is a fixture at Celia. She blends the edgy with the sweet in a mesmerizing concoction. The rebel with a cause refuses to kowtow before mainstream trends, courting every kind of sound beyond the usual set of stereotyped, sell-out tunes. From techno to deep techno, her only mission is to make you dance.
Oct 18, 1am, no cover. Celia, see event listing.
Oct 19: Medusa
Flyer courtesy of Elevator.
While Elevator's Donghu Lu run is coming to an end, they're going strong with a packed line-up to carry you through these last, dark days. Medusa is just one of them. Their extension may have been cancelled (with their final party on the 26th), you can bet your ass they're not going quietly. Come for Mau Mau. Come for the glitter. Come for the kiss stained walls, red lanterns and memories of Baijiu Robot.
Oct 19, 10pm, RMB50. Elevator, see event listing.
Oct 19: Teenage Kicks!
Flyer courtesy of Specters.
Admit it. You were that drunken teen who danced in front of the mirror and blew up trash cans on weekends. Revisit those rowdy years at Specters, dancing to the best in punk, soul and rock music. Expect to hear the Ramones, the Dead Kennedys, Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, the Stooges and much more. Just don’t smash anything, really.
Oct 19, 9pm, no cover everrrr. Specters, see event listing.
Oct 19: NOVA 005 and Tiger Stripes
Flyer courtesy of Perry's.
Swedish techno wouldn’t be the same without Tiger Stripes. The DJ moves between genres at sonic speed and electrifies the crowd with funky, no-nonsense rhythms. Jäegermeister got together with W Shanghai to give him the floor at Perry’s. Expect a night of mind-bending visuals and otherworldly sounds.
Oct 19, 9pm, no cover. Perry’s (Huaihai Lu), see event listing.
Oct 18: The Send Off
Flyer courtesy of Le Baron.
The man supporting all your favorite nights at Le Baron is going on vacation! So the club is showing him a little love. Come out, come dance and let this dude know how much you'll miss him. Man, why's everybody gotta be leaving.
Oct 18, 10pm, no cover. Le Baron, see event listing.
Oct 20: Minimalist at Dada
Flyer courtesy of Dada.
Will A, KSNKST and Matyla are packing in a fresh serving of house, techno and acid for you. In their eighth year of running these parties, they're celebrating with a solid set and maybe even a vodka Redbull. (We have zero confirmation about the last bit, but hey, it's Dada.)
Oct 20, 10pm, no cover. Dada, see event listing.
Oct 20: Shanghai Soul Club with Glen Walton
Flyer courtesy of Specters.
Specters does things the way Specters wants to. This time, they're bringing back Shanghai’s one and only all-vinyl Northern Soul and Motown night. The place becomes a classic dancehall when furniture is pushed to the walls. Folks can jive to '60s classic soul, girl groups, do whop and more. DJ Glen Walton will be commandeering the music to give you the best night possible.
Oct 20, 9pm, no cover. Specters, see event listing.
Oct 20: Block Party on Wuding Lu
Flyer courtesy of the promoter.
If you've partied in Shanghai, you’ve been to Wuding Lu. The street boasts some of Shanghai’s finest and rowdiest establishments. Now you have an excuse to visit all of them without feeling guilty about spending next month’s salary. For only RMB200, get eight drinks from bars of your choice. Places include Bar Centrale, Bites and Brews, Barbarian, Funka Del Sur, SIP, Malabar, Ola, Taoker and more!
Oct 20, 6pm, RMB200. Bar Centrale, see event listing.
Oct 20: Bar Rouge 14th Anniversary: Closing Celebration
Flyer courtesy of Bar Rouge.
Bar Rouge just turned 14 and October 20 is the last night of their anniversary celebrations. Shanghai’s most iconic bar brought back disco in homage to the age of glamor, so expect to see sparklers, performers and a world of unbridled, excessive pleasure. Go in looking good, damn good.
Oct 20, RMB 100 early bird, RMB200 door. Bar Rouge, see event listing.
Until Oct 20: Paulaner Oktoberfest
Okay, hear us out. Yes this is a list of nightlife events, but we went to Oktoberfest and it was a blast. The music was awesome/hilarious, one of the guys in the band looks like Bill Skarsgård, the booze is free-flow and the pretzels are ace. It really is the start for a wild night, so...there. Case made.
Oct 10-20, 5pm, set menus from RMB258; tables are also available, prices vary. Paulaner (Raffles City Changning), see event listing. To make reservations, click here.
