After much speculation it’s been officially announced that summer blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians will get a Chinese mainland release after receiving the green light from China’s film regulator.

Set to hit theaters on November 30, many pundits doubted whether the film would ever hit the silver screen on the Mainland, due to its depictions of decadent spending and wealthy lifestyles – two qualities that clash with the CPC’s promotion of ‘core socialist values.’

Crazy Rich Asians will land in Chinese theaters three and a half months after debuting in North America, where it was released on August 15. In Asia, the romcom was released in Singapore a few days later on August 22 and the following day in Hong Kong – where, two months later, it is still showing in some theaters.

As you’ve probably heard by now, Crazy Rich Asians has been an unmitigated success, raking in over USD230 million worldwide since it’s release. The movie, which has been avidly plugged as ‘the first Hollywood film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast,’ also topped the US box office for three consecutive weekends after hitting theaters.

Last month, the rumor mill kicked into overdrive about a possible sequel to Crazy Rich Asians being set in Shanghai after Liu Yang, the Chinese investor behind the film, said a possible follow up may be titled Shanghai Rich Girlfriends.

“The sequel will truly come to China, and it has to reflect the new money. The first movie is about old money, the sequel is about new money,” said Liu, according to South China Morning Post.
